Odbc error using byte fields in where clauses?

I get an "Unable to query the database" exception when trying to use Byte fields in the where clause for an ODBC connection (to an access 2.0 database)
The message field is just a long string of nonsense.

Any idea for a workaround? I've tried to use STR(field), INT(field) etc, but it's always the same error.
