For the record, I'm presently running WindowsXP and Debian Linux.

So what do you mean by "overlay organization"?

Primary, it is how other packages will interoperate with dmd and gdc. Here are at least two possible ways:
1) When emerging, tell to the ebuild which compiler must be used. It can be done through use flags, but ebuild should decide by itself which compiler flags to use, etc.
2) Better, but harder way. Write helper eclass like toolchain-funcs, so ebuilds can access to system configuration and get paths and flags for current compiler.

For the record, dsource.org runs on Gentoo, and has since Feb. 2004. However, given a generous hosting offer, it may be moving to Debian soon. I will still use Gentoo on my dev laptop, though...

No preference here - I can't think of any objection to either one if implemented well.

Which way would make for simpler ebuilds for stuff like the Derelict bindings or leds?

I use kubuntu myself. Works so well out of the box (or off the CD), plenty of easy tutorials around the net, and based on solid Debian.

I use Ubuntu (I recently updated to the latest 6.10). I also have Windows XP installed, but it's STRICTLY for game playing only.

I run Gentoo on all my linux boxes, and indeed it would be nice to have all of these projects in Portage. Perhaps something like an eselect module would be the ideal solution for different D compilers?

Also, not meaning to fan the fire here, but I don't believe this was a thread in which those that don't use Gentoo could pipe in and say how nice their non-Gentoo choice is (this comment directed at those who have done so).

Perhaps it out of inexperience, but I don't understand your second suggestion lightoze.
Legoguys suggestion for eselect sounds like a good idea. Is that some like your idea? Smile

gdc and phobos ebuild would be nice, too... I think, eselect would be the right way to go

Used Gentoo in the past (until about 5 month ago).
Was my first real Linux distribution, lasted for 3 years, thought me a lot, and I would do it again any time.

But time has come for a change. Now Debian on my desk, Kubuntu on my lap. Also Kubuntu for the family (girlfriend, parents in law). Its simply easier to use, faster to setup and maintain.

I'm using Gentoo on my lap, desktop (amd64) and server, it will be great if D is available in the portage.
