binary download packages should have a top-level directory

Reported by: baxissimo Assigned to: sean
Priority: normal Milestone: 0.99.6
Component: Packaging Version: 0.99.4 Frank

Description

Currently the all-in-one .zips on the download page have bin, import, etc dirs at the top level.

This is evil. There should be a single directory at the top level so that when people extract the archive into an already populated folder it doesn't explode nondescript bits and bobs all over the place.

  • owner changed from sean to larsivi.
  • priority changed from major to normal.
  • component changed from Core Functionality to Packages.
  • milestone changed from 0.99.6 to 0.99.5.

I think I get it now... the layout of the binary packages is to facilitate installation over top of an existing DMD install? However, the tango package includes DMD now, so why would you be installing it over top of an existing DMD install? I think this may be confusing for newbies trying to do a first-time install.

I think I agree with you, but won't happen in this release. FWIW, the linux package does have a toplevel dir.
