This is a good web site for D-related projects, however most of the projects at http://dsource.org/projects/ seem to be very dead. This is *extremely* frustrating because I am trying to get information about D projects and possibly contribute code, but all these dead projects are getting in the way. Can these projects please be moved to a separate section at the bottom of the page so that the living projects are more accessible. Thank you. |

Hi,
wouldn't it be a good idea to show the date of the last project activity
as it could be found on the timeline in the projects list ?
It would be much easier then to examine if a project is dead or active.
greets

It would be much easier then to examine if a project is dead or active. | Brad has mentioned plans to do things like this, but I think he hasn't had time to implement his ideas.
Unless someone provides him with a phpBB plugin that pulls the "last commit date" (or whatever) from the SVN repositories, this may not happen for a while. |

It's a bit more difficult than that. I have been working on such things and will present some statistics to this effect at the D Conference later this month. However, how would you categorize JDom in the Java world? They hit 1.0 in like 2004, and no code has been committed and no new downloads have been added (of any note). And yet, the project accomplished all of its goals, it is a stable code base, and overall excellent lib. Should it be banished to the bottom of the page b/c nothing is on their theoretical Timeline page? Point is, I'm trying to weave pageviews and downloads into the statistics so that we get a feel for popularity in addition to activity.

Hi Brad,
sorry, this was just a suggestion of mine to have a better overview.
I did not mean to change the sort order, just have some more cols with things like last activity and perhabs hits and downloads as you are planning.
Meanwhile I tried to figure out how this could be done and I agree with you and jcc7 : It is not simple AND not having enough time for all the things we'd like to do is always the problem.
However, I think dsource is a great page and gives newbees like I am a great oppertunity to step into D and even to participate.
Thanx for your work.
cheers

I have to add my vote for paring out dead projects. Its *very* frustrating. And it makes the D community look unhealthy or dead itself.
As you say, doing it in code may take some time, but it would certainly be possible to do a cursory culling by hand of the projects page. If you want, Ill produce the dead list so that all there is to do is to go in an change it.

ditto. A quick hand sweeping would be appreciated. Manual processes ftw! |
