Yes, I think Unicode support should be the first area to focus our forces on. Much of the rest might be delegated, but this is to basic and to important. A new thread on the subject should be opened. Posts from the opening discussions around Ares should be referenced at the top. |
Should we recruit Arcane Jill to help is with the unicode ? I know nothing on the subject so I'm of no help.
How about some input on the IO , whos for adopting mango, or a streams ( seans ? ) rewrite ?

Since IO apparently is very dependent on the unicodehandling, perhaps IO decisions should wait until unicode is properly handled/taken care of/whatever. Then it might be easier to make some good IO discussions (unless I've misunderstood everything .
And yes, please invite Jill. |

Ok good deal, sent her an email through phpBB.
So should we start the re-write ? Maybe we should first just organize it in the heirachy we've laid out ( maybe praga can upload that to SVN somewhere, or do we have SVN yet ? ).
Seems like were losing steam a little, lets keep it going!
I will try to re-ogranize it according to the layout and see if it compiles.

Yup. Frankly, I'd like to put off IO for a while, because it's fairly complex and depends on other portions of the library. Let's start with the basics and build from there. I was thinking core components and some talk about general library design. I'm hoping if we delay on exceptions a bit then Matthew will have completed his review and we can use whatever is decided, so for now let's just inherit from Error and then change it later. Also, I'd like to ask Walter to make it easier to separate DMD and Phobos, perhaps by moving anything DMD needs out of /std. I think I'll post something about this today. So assuming these are taken care of (at least for now), how about we start with the fundamental building blocks and go from there? A possible starting point would be some UTF routines--conversion, validation, etc. I'll start a thread on algorithms since that's a catchall. |

Unicode support is now available via the ICU project bindings. See http://www.dsource.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=447 |
